My JC journey

My JC journey

One week ago, we went to Dunman High School for the first time with excitement. Although before that, I have heard from our group leader that DHS is a very Chinese school, I was still very surprised about style of the whole surroundings, which is even more Chinese than my senior high school in china. This is my first impression to this antique and lovely school.
The first day is the most exciting day. Because it is the first time for me to wake up at 5:30 since I join RVR, the first time to attend flag-raising ceremony in Singapore as well as the day we back to senior high life. I met my buddy after taking the flag-raising ceremony in the meeting room. She is so cute a girl just like her name, Kaijing. With her accompany and help, I changed into school uniform and joined her class. Classmates are all friendly and easygoing who shared snacks and told me which teacher is good-looking and which teacher is good-teaching… I felt I have truly a JC student. The foods in canteen attracted me a lot which are cheaper and more delicious. Kaijing recommended different foods to my every day, and I feel my weight shapely increasing in this week. The arrangement of timetable is so different here compared with that in China. We changed classroom every lesson without a 10 minutes break. Another issue I found which is very different from China is that Singaporean JC students have much independent leaning. They have various CCA to take part in to enrich their spare time.
Time flies by. In these 5 days, I experienced JC students’ life and the education of Singapore. What the most important is that I made many local friends. This is a memorable experience.

Last day @ Dunman HIgh = =

When I got up this morning, I realized that it would be the last day for me to get up so early recently. I was surprised that I did not feel any sense of satisfaction and pleasure. The ending of getting up early also indicates the farewell with my buddies in DHS. In the morning, I attended the last mathematics class and was inspired by the last time of the heated discussion and active participation of classmates. In the afternoon, I chatted with my friends and took photos with them, as well as, Mr. Yang, who was in charge of our program. When I left the school and looked around on the playground for the last time, I knew that it is likely I would not have the chance to come back here again, but the golden memory brought about by my local friends has been engraved in my mind. I learnt how to interact and make friends with Singaporeans and I hoped the friendship between they and I is everlasting and permanent. I  Goodbye, my wonderful JC experience!

Horizon

Students’ international horizon and wide knowledge also surprised me. The school offers double culture scholars opportunities going abroad for studying every June and December. They take classes there and communicate with the high school students there. By experiencing different cultural atmosphere and contacting with different students, they have a much wider horizon. For example, despite telling me the educational system and customs in Singapore, my buddy often talks about their visits to China, America and some other exchange programs. The negligibility of history in China and the discrimination in America really give me a super surprise. Besides, the various programs also offer nutriment to their inquiring mind. Such as my buddy, who take part in a language program, has studied French for 2 years and Japanese for 3 years.

Educaiton

The educational assessment system is rational and practical based on three aspects. The range of choosing courses is quite large for secondary students. Students can choose to take literature, half literature and half science, physics and chemistry, chemistry and biology. Besides, students can also choose to take different courses in order to earn the module credits, which is quite similar to the university. This offers the precondition of education according to interest for the students. The second complementary point is that they have all kinds of essays for homework, which need them to summarize main points they learnt, compare and comparison as well as adding their view points. In my perspective, it is not easy for them to study the literature. In contrast to china, where rote reciting possess the dominate position, literature students need to search for lots of materials to form their own perspective. Moreover, in the middle of the eastern and western culture, students have a broaden horizon because they take in information from both sides. Besides, the neutral position also gives students an opportunity to view events and affairs in all-round perspective, opposite to some places where the authority may shield some information.

the last day-- Zhou Jiani

Today is the last day at Dunman High school and it is also the last few minutes for me to stay with the whole class. Students in the class are really warm-hearted and help me a lot, both in study and life. The hard-won days are quite impressed to me and I enjoy them a lot. My buddy is a lovely and cheerful girl and we get on well with each other. She took me around the campus, has lunch with me everyday, and introduced me to all her friends and so on. She took care of me for the five days and I hope one day, if she comes to NUS, I can also show her around and help her as much as I can. In a word, the JC visit must be one of the most unforgettable experiences during the bridging course and I make a lot of friends in these days.

Tan Yang 4

Today is the fourth day I stay at Dunman High.
Today our teacher took us to the museum of school's history to see the development of Dunman. I have to say that Dunman, this 57-year-old school, has a really colorful history. There are so many brilliant people coming from Dunman.
Tomorrow students will know their grades for A level. Hope I can share the happiness with them.

Life in Dunman High School

After studying in Dunman High School for four days, I found a lot of differences between the education system of Singapore and China.
Firstly, the time schedule of senior high school is totally different from China. In China, the class in the morning is from 7:30 am to 12:00 noon, and each of the break is only 10 minutes long. The class in the afternoon is from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. while the class will end early in Singapore because students will attend ACC activities in the afternoon which has many kinds of activities like sports and Chinese instruments. In China, most students have no time to attend extra activities after school time.
Secondly, the number of students in one class is much less than that in China which is because of the large population in China.
Thirdly, in China, almost every lesson students have in the same class while students will change classroom every lesson.
I think the lessons in Singapore's Junior College are very interesting and I am very glad to experience the life in Singapore Junior College.I can also learn a lot about Singapore's culture, characteristics of Singapore students and features of Singapore education system, which is helpful for me to adjust into Singapore.

Back to High School

It was not because I have nothing to say about my JC visit that I have not  posted my first reflection until tonight, but I have got so many things to say that I really have no idea how to start. Dunman High school is really a nice school and every student there is warm and kind to me. Everyday, I tried to know more about the school life in Singapore and make new friends. Putting on the school uniform, I feel like I were younger. The sense of going back to high school again makes me energetic. By the way, today is the start of SC election in Dunman and my buddy is one of the 32 candidates. Therefore, all the best to my buddy~

First Day @ DHS

Today is the first day of our JXP program. We arrived in Dunman high school with the accompany of moon and early beed. The first impression I had when I stepped into the campus is that Dumman high is the school that is immersed in traditional Chinese cultural atmosphere. Chinese calligraphy compositions are tidily hung in different places around the campus and there is a statue of Confucius in the garden of the school. After the brief introduction of Dunman high, I met with my buddy, Rachel, who was a cute and friendly girl. I proceeded to her chemistry lab lessons and I made friends with her classmates. Some of the guys in her class are really humorous and  funny! We then attended the physics lecture in the auditorium. The first day in Dunman high is very short since the timetable of my buddy was not compact. Couldn't wait to be immersed into this new group and made as many local friends as possible! > <

Third day @ DHS

Again when I got up today morning, the sky was still dark adulterated with blue. Today we had to wear  school uniform, since in the afternoon we would have a weekly assemble. When I arrived in the school, we firstly had a P.E class, the teacher was really kind and helpful, patiently told me the rules of shooting ball and encouraged me to join the game. Though I played so bad and caused numerous defaults, but I enjoyed the participation! After the chemistry class, we had a one-hour break. I was surprised that Singaporean students go to the canteen to eat and study during such valuable break. If it is in China, every students will go downstairs to the playground and relax! Singaporean students are really hardworking and busy. But in my opinions, their focus of striving is diverse, like CCA, students consult, study, all kinds of activities. Chinese students, however, concentrate merely on academic study.  As a result, Singaporean students are more versatile than Chinese students to some extents. Tomorrow, my buddy Rachel will have a CCA, looking forward to it!

Tan Yang the third day at Dunman

Today is the third at Dunman high school.
I become more familiar with them and I can play games with them together. So happy!
library

The first lesson today was geography, which is the course my buddy did not choose. Because of my strong interest in it, my buddy let her classmates guide me. The teacher teaching geography was very good at teaching. He can use many examples to explain what global city, primate city and mega city are.

During the free period , I visited Dunman's library, which is very beautiful. Different from NUS's libraries, this one is more cute and has more books which are not related with study, just for fun.

I also attended a Chinese Literature Linguistic, which was very interesting. This lesson talked a lot about Du Fu, who was also my favorite poet. To my surprise, this lesson is more difficult than those in China and students can learn more. This is the picture of the mind map we drew on class.

In the afternoon, we attended the election for student council. Candidates are so creative  that they used many interesting ways to draw people's attention and they were very confident. I learned a lot from their self-introductions.
Today was a happy day, however, once I think about today's evening's Checkpoint...Oh, My goddess.. .

Second day-- Zhou Jiani

It is now the end of the second day of my JXP. I had math and chemistry tutorials, as well as the lectures of the two subjects. Almost all the knowledge I learnt today was of the same content as what we have learnt in China. However, when it goes into English, it is hard to understand. Many proper nouns were so unfamiliar that I had to look them up in the dictionary. The teacher in charge took care of me and he always asked me whether I had understood or not. Honestly speaking, I was embarrassed to say that I couldn’t understand the titles. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of learning here very much. I used to just listen to teachers and do the homework everyday with any pleasure and I regarded learning a painful thing. The learning here changed my mind totally—learning can also be joyful and full of sense of success. ^_^ I also made friends with some students, both locals and Chinese students.

first day of JXP-- Zhou Jiani

Today is the first day of my junior college experience program and I have a lot of feelings that I want to share with my friends. My first impression of the school was that all students wore school uniforms and dressed smartly, quite different from what we did in China. When I met with my buddy, I was happy to find that she is a lovely and out-going girl with great enthusiasm to life and study. I tried my best to communicate with her using English and she could understand most of my words. Having class with the students was really interesting and they were all so energetic that they could always come up with questions during the class time. Nevertheless, there was something that was quite difficult for me to adapt to. The timetable here was the hardest difficulty for me. In China, we never have meals at ten o’clock or two o’clock in the afternoon. Moreover, I was used to taking a nap everyday to keep my mind clear in the afternoon; in the JC, students never do like this. Therefore, I fell asleep on the lecture. These are my feelings and experience in my first day in JC. Hope to make friends with more local friends and learn more about the JC life here!

(Wu Chang)Hand Rug and "spicy fish"-- second day at Dunman High School

It is the first time for me to try rugby! Very fun game! (Although I understood the rules almost at the end of the class ^ ^). It is a nice day, nice weather, and my classmates are really nice people. I enjoyed a lot running             on the playground with them!
Thank for Amanda! You are so patient with me:). I mean, sometimes I did not get the direction right but now, I have remembered our class is C41-B at the fourth floor! Hahaha. BTW, you are really hardworking people, and best wishes for you in the exam!
In addition, do you really think the Thai food in the school canteen is spicy? I tried it today, and I do not think it is spicy, maybe just for me...haha. Maybe I can try the noodles tomorrow!
Hope we all have a good rest today and I am looking for seeing you again!

Tan Yang 2 (The second day at Dunman High school.)

So fast today passed! Today I had a lesson about Chinese language course, which is so interesting! It is surprising that this lesson was given in Chinese. At first, I doubted that Singaporeans were not very good at Chinese, so using Chinese to teach Chinese Culture, is it too difficult for my buddies? After half and an hour, I found that they can even use Chinese to analyze modern China society. It is so cool! I also felt so excited for listening to a Chinese lesson in Singapore.

Next I had a mathematics lecture. For the content of this lecture is tutorial, it is not very interesting. As a result, I slept for the whole lecture...
Then I had a PE lesson. Today we played valley-ball. Because I have not done sports for a long time, I felt so tired. It is different from the lesson in China. The whole lesson we had activities to play, however, in China, we just play what we want, and teacher usually arrange nothing for us. Yeah, this lesson, tired but very happy!

Tan Yang 1

Today I felt so happy for making many friends in Dunman high school. The girls are so nice. They made me feel like back to my own high school. They are also very considerate that they prepared the tutorial for me.
There is one  thing that astonished me, which is in my buddy's class, there is only one boy but 18 girls. When I talked to him, I felt he was a very outgoing and liked politics.
Dunman high school is a school teaching in two languages, English and Chinese. The campus buildings are very beautiful with many Chinese characters written by writing brush. And in my buddy's class, all students take Chinese language lessons. They even know more about China in some aspects than me. Cannot believe it!
Today although it is very tired, I am still very happy for making so many kind friends. Now I am looking forward the nest few days in Dunman High School.

The first day

Here is our 16 SM2 students's life in Dunman High School. Hope we can enjoy this week!
